Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay learned to love the arts from the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good tool for political activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to make use of the arts as a way to express herself. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as an elementary school student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash of one of members of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
